Ukraine to cut gas consumption by 6 pct in 2015: PM

Xinhua, April 15, 2015 Adjust font size:

Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said Wednesday that his country will reduce natural gas consumption by 6.1 percent this year to 40 billion cubic meters.

"Increasing energy efficiency and reducing energy consumption is a priority for the country," Yatsenyuk told a cabinet meeting.

Ukraine's gas consumption would decline this year as a result of the introduction of energy-saving technologies, use of alternative fuels and economic slowdown.

Last year, Ukraine reduced its gas consumption to 42.6 billion cubic meters from 50.4 billion cubic meters in 2013 due to the crisis in energy-intensive industries triggered by the conflict in eastern Ukraine, the country's industrial heartland.

Ukraine last year produced over 21 billion cubic meters of gas to meet about half of its domestic demand. Imports from Russia covered 36.2 percent of the country's gas consumption in 2014, and 13 percent was purchased from the EU. Endi
