French Open to have 12% increase in total prize money

Xinhua, April 14, 2015 Adjust font size:

The prize money for 2015 French Open will have an increase of 12% compared with last year, according to Roland-Garros' press release on Tuesday.

The total prize money will be 28,028,600 euros, three million more than that of last year.

The biggest increases have come for the early rounds losers as men's and women's players knocked out in the second, third and fourth rounds, will see their prize money boosted by almost 20% compared with last year.

"This significant increase in the prize money for Roland-Garros is part of the four-year plan established for 2013-2016," explained Gilbert Ysern, tournament director and Chief Executive of the FFT.

"It is chiefly designed to benefit those men's and women's players who are knocked out in the first week," he added.

Singles champions at this year's French Open will each receive 1.8 million euros, 150,000 euros more than last year's champions Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova.

The total prize money at this year's Australian Open is 36.3 million australian dollars (about 25.95m euros), while that of last year's Wimbledon Open is 25m pounds (about 34.58m euros) and 38.3m U.S. dollars (about 35.80m euros) in U.S. Open.

The French Open, the second Grand Slam of the year, starts here on May 19. Endi
