Japan's CO2 emissions in FY2013 hit highest since 2007

Xinhua, April 14, 2015 Adjust font size:

Japan's greenhouse gas emissions climbed 1.2 percent year on year in fiscal 2013, the highest level in six years, according to statistics released by the Environment Ministry on Tuesday.

The ministry on Tuesday revised the emissions in fiscal 2013 ( April 1,2013-March 31, 2014) to an equivalent of 1.408 billion tons of carbon dioxide, from preliminary figures of 1.395 billion tons announced in December last year.

The ministry attributed the emission increase in fiscal 2013 to the higher consumption of coal by thermal power plants.

Emissions from the commerce and services sector, such as hotels and office buildings, rose 9.9 percent in fiscal 2013 from the previous year.

According to revised figures by the ministry, Japan produced record high level of greenhouse gas emissions in fiscal 2007 with 1.412 billion tons.

Japan needs to promote energy conservation and the use of clean energy, said a ministry official.

The Japanese government has set a target of cutting emission by 3.8 percent by fiscal 2020 from fiscal 2005. However, emissions in fiscal 2013 saw 0.8 percent increase from fiscal 2005. Endi
