Slovak banks making larger profits from increased fees: central bank data

Xinhua, April 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

Increased fees led to larger profits for banks in the first two months of 2015, the National Bank of Slovakia (NBS) said in its latest data bulletin Monday.

On a year-on-year basis, profits were up by 15 million euros (15.86 million U.S. dollars), official data showed.

Comparing with neighboring countries, bank fees in Slovakia without discounts are higher than those in the Czech Republic, Austria or Poland. For average banking account, Slovaks pay 6 euros monthly. In Czech Republic, the average monthly payment is 3.5 euros, in Poland 4 euros and in Austria 5.2 euros.

"Slovak clients can avoid sizable fees only if they meet bank's criteria, then there will be 30 to 50 percent discounts," said Pavel Skriniar, bank analyst from the website Financna Hitparada.

According to bank analyst Maros Ovciarik from the portal Financial Compass, "there's a long-time trend of increasing fees for bank services in Slovakia." (1 euro = 1.06 U.S. dollars) Endit
