Russia lifts ban on supply of S-300 missile systems to Iran

Russia has lifted a ban on supplying Iran with the sophisticated S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems, the Kremlin said Monday.

President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree to lift the ban on the sales of the S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems, the Kremlin's press service said in a statement.

"The decree lifts the ban on ... the transfer of the S-300 air defense systems to the Islamic Republic of Iran outside the boundaries of the Russian Federation with the use of Russian-flagged vessels and aircraft," said the statement.

The move came after Iran and six world powers, including Russia, reached a framework accord earlier this month on parameters of Iran's controversial nuclear program.

Moscow and Teheran signed an 800-million-U.S.-dollar contract in 2007 to supply Iran with five S-300 systems.

In September 2010, then Russian President Dmitry Medvedev canceled the contract to comply with a resolution of the U.N. Security Council, which banned the supply of conventional weapons to Iran. Endi
