U.S. stocks open higher ahead of earnings season

Xinhua, April 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

U.S. stocks opened higher Monday as investors awaited the beginning of earnings season this week.

The first quarter earnings season will officially kick off Tuesday with blue chips JPMorgan reporting before the opening bell.

Other big companies like Wells Fargo, Johnson & Johnson and Intel will also announce their quarterly earnings Tuesday.

This is also a big week for data in the United States, starting Tuesday with March retail sales and the Producer Price Index (PPI). The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is on the schedule Friday.

Shortly after the opening bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 18.19 points, or 0.10 percent, to 18,075.84. The S&P 500 rose 2.49 points, or 0.12 percent, to 2,104.55. The Nasdaq Composite Index increased 13.86 points, or 0.28 percent, to 5,009.84.

U.S. stocks ended higher last Friday, marking a three-day rally with the Dow topping 18,000 for the first time in April, boosted by General Electric's restructuring plan and a broad-based stock increase around the world.

GE said it would create a simpler, more valuable company by reducing the size of its financial business through the sale of most GE Capital assets. The company's board authorized a new repurchase program of up to 50 billion U.S. dollars in common stock as well. Endi
