Oil fuel spilled in Vancouver under clean-up

Xinhua, April 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

Clean-up efforts were underway by the Canadian Coast Guard and West Coast Marine Response Corporation following the fuel spill in Vancouver's English Bay Wednesday night, Port Metro Vancouver said Thursday morning.

The fuel spilled into the English Bay close to downtown Vancouver was toxic bunker fuel and should not be touched, the City of Vancouver warned in a tweeter message on Thursday.

The spill was spreading as a grimy sheen on the water, and it may push the oil to shore, the city's tweeter added.

The fuel spill was surrounding a grain ship anchored in deep water off Vancouver, said John Parker-Jervis, a spokesman for Port Metro Vancouver.

"There was a fair amount of product -- what appears to be fuel, oil for the ships, around a particular grain carrier," he said. As precaution, a boom has been constructed around the ship in an attempt to contain the fuel, though the ship isn't yet confirmed as the source, he added.

There is no estimate on the amount of fuel spilled so far. Endite
