Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and opposition leader Sam Rainsy will for the first time jointly inaugurate the Angkor Sankranta festival, which will be held on April 14-16 in northwest Cambodia's Siem Reap City to celebrate Khmer New Year.

"On the New Year day, His Excellency Sam Rainsy, on behalf of the opposition party, and I, on behalf of the ruling party, will join together to inaugurate Angkor Sankranta festival in Siem Reap City," the prime minister said in a joint press briefing after a parliamentary session. "This will probably be the first historic milestone that happens in Cambodia."

Sam Rainsy said their joint participation in the festival will be a political message to the Cambodian people to trust in the leaders of Cambodia.

"Cambodia will be prosperous when the Cambodians in all political tendencies respect each other, shake hands with each other, work together, and trust each other," he said.

He added that the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party and the ruling Cambodian People's Party vowed to adhere to the culture of dialogue in settling all issues for the interests of the nation.

The Angkor Sankranta festival, to be held at the complex of the world heritage Angkor Wat Temple in Siem Reap City, is organized by the Union of Youth Federation of Cambodia, which is led by Hun Sen's youngest son Hun Many.

A variety of events, including traditional games, sports, dancing, singing, martial arts, trade exhibition, food show, and modern concert, will be shown at the festival, which is expected to attract hundreds of thousands of domestic and foreign visitors. Endi
