Lebanon's Prime Minister Tammam Salam expressed Tuesday his country's commitment to strengthen relations with Spain and also praised Spain's participation in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

In a press statement released by his media office, Salam welcomed at the Grand Serail the King of Spain Felipe VI in the presence of members of the accompanying Spanish delegation.

"I welcomed in this context the efforts of the Spanish contingent operating within the peacekeeping force and praised its successes in building a friendly relations with the Lebanese citizens," the prime minister said in the statement.

Salam also offered condolences to King Felipe for the tragic death of Corporal Francesco Javier who was killed during an Israeli bombardment in south Lebanon on January 28.

The Spanish king arrived Tuesday in Beirut on a two-day official visit and he is expected to meet with some Lebanese officials and inspect his country's contingent in the UNIFIL peacekeeping force.
