India, Japan agree to deepen defense cooperation

India and Japan on Tuesday decided to deepen their defense cooperation and enhance strategic maritime ties, during a meeting between the defense officials of the two countries here, said Press Trust of India.

The two sides reviewed the entire gamut of bilateral defence ties as top officials met here for the 4th Defense Policy Dialogue, said the report.

"All issues of mutual concern and interest were discussed today, " the report quoted defense sources as saying.

The meeting was chaired by Indian Defense Secretary R. K. Mathur and Japanese Vice Minister of Defense for International Affairs Hideshi Tokuchi, according to the report.

The two-day talks started Monday, according to local media reports.

They were held as the United States is pushing for making the " Malabar" Naval exercises between India and the U.S. into a trilateral framework to involve Japan as a permanent participant.

India and Japan have been discussing some strategic defense cooperation issues, including joint production of the Japanese amphibious aircraft US-2 and strengthening maritime security cooperation.

Indian Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar visited Japan last week and talks with Japanese officials on defense and security cooperative stepping up measures, according to local media reports. Endi
