The Sri Lankan government said on Tuesday that the just concluded visit of President Maithripala Sirisena to Pakistan has generated a new momentum towards charting a more dynamic course in the relations between two countries.
A statement by the Foreign Ministry said that the president, during his visit, had extended an invitation to Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to undertake a visit to Sri Lanka with a view to continuing bilateral dialogue and to further cement the strong friendship shared by the two countries.
At the invitation of President Mamnoon Hussain and Sharif, Sirisena paid a state visit to Pakistan from April 5 to 7, the first visit by him to Pakistan since he won the election in January 2015.
During the visit, President Sirisena briefed the Pakistani leader on some of the recent developments in Sri Lanka, particularly on the progress of the 100-day Program which commits Sri Lanka on a path to strengthen democracy, independence of the judiciary, respect for the rule of law and ensure that all communities in Sri Lanka enjoy the dividend of peace which has dawned in the country, the Foreign Ministry statement said.
The statement said that during the wide-ranging discussions between Sirisena and Sharif, the two leaders reviewed the political, economic, cultural, education, consular, legal, defence and other spheres of engagement which at present straddle the bilateral relationship.
They also shared views on ways and means of further strengthening the robust relations between the two countries. Endi
