Xinhua, April 6, 2015 Adjust font size:

Schalke were held to a goalless draw at Augsburg meanwhile Berlin snatched a 2-0 win thanks to two second-half goals at the German Bundesliga on Sunday.

Fifth placed Schalke dropped points in the hunt of a UEFA Champions League berth as they were held to a goalless draw by sixth placed Augsburg. However both clubs set the course for the UEFA Europa League.

Both teams staged a fast paced encounter yet Augsburg caught the better start meanwhile Schalke needed time to grab a foothold into the match.

Augsburg were unable to overcome Schalke's well positioned defense hence they tried to reach success with long range efforts but neither Raul Bobadilla's nor Caiuby's shots were able to break the deadlock from the distance.

After the restart, Schalke had the golden chance to open the scoring but Klaas Jan Huntelaar squandered the chance from promising position with just goalkeeper Marwin Hitz to beat. Nevertheless, Augsburg's Bobadilla came close twice in the closing period but the striker pulled wide.

With the result, both teams remain on their positions, Schalke stay on the 5th place, eight points adrift of 4th placed Leverkusen, who occupy a Champions League berth. Augsburg, one points behind Schalke, remain on the 6th position of the table with 39 points.

Elsewhere, Berlin secured vital points in the relegation battle as they defeated newly promoted and relegation threatened Paderborn 2-0. Both teams lacked in penetration and ideas at the first half, however, things changed at the second half as Berlin broke the deadlock at the 68th minute through Valentin Stocker. Paderborn were unable to clear the ball from the penalty area following a free kick that dropped off the bar, allowing Stocker to poke home from six meters.

Berlin gained momentum and worked out opportunities through Salomon Kalou and Genki Haraguchi before Nico Schulz volleyed home a cross at the far post to make the game safe with two minutes remaining.

With the crucial win, Berlin jump from the 13th to the 11th place while Paderborn remain on the 17th position of the standings. Endi
