PSV extend lead on Ajax to ten points

Xinhua, April 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

PSV took another step towards the Dutch league title after winning 5-0 at FC Twente on Saturday while rivals Ajax drawing 1-1 at FC Utrecht on Sunday.

Ajax looked on their way to their first victory at FC Utrecht since March 2009 with the visitors taking the lead six minutes after half-time. A corner by Lasse Schone, who had already hit the crossbar with a free-kick, was touched by Davy Klaassen, which led to an own goal by Utrecht defender Ramon Leeuwin.

However, Utrecht substitute Gevero Markiet equalized five minutes from time. The home-team finished the match with ten men after Leeuwin received a red card for a tackle on Nicolai Boilesen.

PSV left no doubt about their title aspirations with an emphatic 5-0 win over FC Twente in Enschede on Saturday. Luuk de Jong, Jeffrey Bruma, Georginio Wijnaldum and Memphis Depay (twice) scored. With 19 goals the latter is the leading scorer of the Eredivisie.

With five rounds remaining PSV now have a ten-point lead over number two Ajax. The battle for the first place is therefore almost decided, but Feyenoord can still hope for the second place.

The Rotterdam based side beat AZ 4-1 in Alkmaar on Sunday, thanks to an own goal by Derrick Luckassen, a goal by Anass Achahbar and a brace by Elvis Manu. A late own goal by Sven van Beek gave AZ some consolation. Feyenoord now trail Ajax by six points and are seven points clear from number four AZ.

The Dutch champions will directly qualify for the Champions League, the second-placed team gets a ticket for the Champions League preliminary round and the number three a direct berth in the Europa League preliminary round. Endi
