(Recast) IGAD condemns terrorist attack on Kenya university

Xinhua, April 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) on Friday condemned terrorist attack at Garissa University in Northern Kenya that claimed 147 lives.

Al-Shabaab militants stormed into the university campus on Thursday dawn and shot randomly at defenseless guards, students and faculty members.

"As a region, we are saddened by this barbaric act of terrorism and extend our deepest condolences to the government and people of Kenya, particularly to the parents and families of the victims," said Ambassador Mahboub Maalim, the Executive Secretary of IGAD.

The latest attack on a university campus located near the border with Somalia came against a backdrop of heightened vigilance in the wake of terror alerts from foreign missions based in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.

Regional blocs expressed solidarity with the Kenyan government to intensify the war against terrorism.

"IGAD will continue to work with Kenya and other countries in the region to fight terrorism and other threats to stability," Maalim said in a statement. Endi
