MoU eases Japan's ban on Thai chartered flights

Xinhua, April 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

Thai and Japanese aviation agencies on Friday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU), which eased Japan's ban against chartered flights by Thai- registered airlines.

The MoU, signed by Thailand's Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) and the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB), allowed Thai chartered flights to continue operation through May, Voradet Harnprasert, Thailand's deputy permanent secretary for transport, was quoted by Bangkok Post as saying.

Earlier, the JCAB announced to prohibit Thai-registered airlines from adding chartered and scheduled flights or changing aircraft types, after the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) voiced concerns over the DCA's operation standards.

The ICAO said it had detected "significant safety concerns" over the DCA's standards in a January audit, and it also rejected a corrective action plan the DCA submitted later in response to its concerns.

As allowed by the newly-invoked Article 44 of the interim constitution, Thai authorities have set up two committees to oversee the revamp of the DCA. Endi
