Vancouver police seize significant narcotics

Xinhua, April 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

Vancouver police have made a significant narcotic seizure after a six-month investigation into a drug trafficking network operating throughout Vancouver and its surrounding cities, police said on Wednesday.

Vancouver Police Superintendent Mike Porteous revealed the seizures include 20 kg of cocaine, 1.6 kg of heroin, 12 kg of methamphetamine, 23,000 fentanyl pills, 228 kg of phenacetin and 12 firearms and ammunition.

The total value of the drugs seized was estimated at 1.8 million Canadian dollars (1.4 million U.S. dollars), he said, adding that police also found about 575,000 CAD (454,000 U.S. dollars) in cash during the search.

The police was informed in September of a criminal organization supplying residents in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside with drugs, including cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine and fentanyl, the police said in a statement.

The crime group was selling drugs to marginalized members of the community. The criminals were also believed to be shipping large quantities of the drugs to Vancouver Island and into Alberta.

On March 11, investigators executed 11 search warrants throughout Vancouver and its suburb cities.

"The assistance of Federal Serious Organized Crime (FSOC) and the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mouned Police) in executing the search warrants was essential to the success of the project," Porteous said.

Charges are being recommended against 11 people for drugs and weapons offenses. Endite
