UN chief appoints new head of UNEP's New York office

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon has appointed Elliott Harris of Trinidad and Tobago as Assistant Secretary-General and head of the New York Office of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), a UN spokesman said on Wednesday.
Harris joined UNEP's Senior Management Team in 2013 and will play a central role in UNEP's contribution to the Post 2015 development agenda, the Rio+20 Summit outcomes, among other things, deputy UN spokesman Farhan Haq said at a daily news briefing here.
Prior to joining the UN, Harris began his career in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in 1988, where he worked in the African Department and the Fiscal Affairs Department. In 2008, he was appointed as Special Representative to the UN.
UNEP is dedicated to coordinating environmental activities and assisting developing countries in implementing environmentally sound policies and practices.
The role of the UNEP New York Office is to maintain a close link between UNEP headquarters in Nairobi and UN headquarters in New York. Endite
