Oil well explodes in Albania, no casualties reported

An oil well explosion hit Albanian Marinez, east of the city of Fier, on Wednesday, but no casualties were reported.

The gas explosion in the well No. 8 in Marinez produced huge amount of fumes, under which circumstances the government was determined to evacuate the affected area's residents.

The operation on the well by Canadian company Bankers Petroleum was suspended according to the order of the Albanian Environmental Inspectorate.

"Full suspension of activity until all measures will be taken for dealing with waste. There shall be no resumption of activity until the fulfillment of those requirements," the official announcement of the Albanian Environmental Inspectorate reads.

An uncontrolled gas leak in Marinza oil field on Wednesday morning was triggered during a drilling operation into an oil well operated by the Canadian company Bankers Petroleum Albania Ltd..

The company activated the emergency operations plan to isolate the uncontrolled natural gas leak during drilling operations, according to Albanian telegraphic agency.

Company sources said that there are no reports of injuries, while the gas explosion is not harmful. Operations are underway to stop the leakage and launch cleaning operation of the affected area. Endit
