France expects to continue cordial ties with Nigeria's new gov't: Hollande

Xinhua, April 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

French President Francois Hollande has congratulated Nigeria's Muhammadu Buhari on his victory in the country's presidential election, and expressed his willing to cement the bilateral ties.

A statement reaching Xinhua from the French embassy in Nigeria on Wednesday said Hollande "welcomed the commitment of the Nigerian people and the professionalism exhibited by the country's electoral body in the conduct of the polls."

According to the statement, Hollande will speak with Buhari on Thursday as France intends to continue its cordial relationship with Nigeria.

"France continues to stand with Nigeria to uphold democratic values, fight against terrorism and promote economic partnership between the two countries," the statement added.

Buhari, of Nigeria's opposition All Progressives Congress, beat outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan by about 2.5 million votes, with Jonathan conceded defeat on Tuesday. Endi
