Turkey president still plans Iran visit despite calls for cancellation

Xinhua, March 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

President Recep Tayyib Erdogan of Turkey said on Monday that he still plans to visit Iran next week despite calls by the Islamic republic's parliament to cancel the visit following his remarks accusing Tehran of interfering in Yemen.

There is no change at the moment in the schedule of the Iran visit, planned for April 5, Erdogan told reporters in Istanbul before departing for Slovenia.

On Thursday, Erdogan accused Iran of "trying to dominate the region," and said that Tehran's actions will not be tolerated.

Erdogan's remarks prompted several Iranian officials to call for the cancellation of his upcoming visit to Tehran.

"Our remarks for Yemen were for respect and for preserving territorial integrity of the country," Erdogan said.

Turkey is closely watching the situation in Yemen, he added, noting that Ankara would take steps according to developments in the country.

Turkey has announced its support for the Saudi-led airstrikes on Shiite Houthi positions in Yemen. Endit
