UN chief visits Baghdad

Xinhua, March 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon arrived here on Monday for talks with top Iraqi leaders.

"The United Nations secretary-general arrived in Baghdad this morning on an official visit to Iraq," the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) said.

A Foreign Ministry official told Xinhua that Ban is expected to meet with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and other top Iraqi officials to discuss political and security developments in the country.

Security in Iraq has worsened drastically since last June, when bloody clashes broke out between Iraqi security forces and Islamic State (IS) militants, which took control of the country's northern city of Mosul and later seized swathes of territories in Nineveh and other predominantly Sunni provinces.

Ban last visited Iraq on Jan. 13, 2014, when he met Iraqi leaders to discuss the turmoil in Iraq's Anbar province and regional issues such as the crisis in Syria. Endit
