Mining sector drags British FTSE 100 down on Friday

FTSE 100 Index, the British benchmark stock market gauge, decreased by 0.58 percent, or 40.31 points, to 6,855.02 points on Friday.

Carnival's share price shot up by 7.18 percent, topping the gainers of the blue chips. InterContinental Hotels Group, Shire, SABMiller and Compass Group increased by 2.76 percent, 2.17 percent, 1.43 percent and 1.21 percent respectively.

Weir Group led the top losers of the blue chips with a share price drop of 3.55 percent, followed by Glencore (3.05 percent), Sports Direct International (3.04 percent), Anglo American (3.02 percent) and Randgold Resources (2.98 percent).

The index has gained 5.61 percent so far this year when measured in U.S. dollars. Endit
