Major power failure disrupts flights at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport

Xinhua, March 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

Air traffic at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport was severely disrupted for a while on Friday due to a major power outage in parts of the province of North Holland.

For about 90 minutes, all flights from and to the airport were canceled and the airport had to run on emergency power for a while.

"The power outage lasted one and a half hour," Inge van Rijn, a spokesperson for the Schiphol Airport, told Xinhua. "At 10:43 a.m. (0943 GMT) we got back to normal power and we are now starting up again. The inbound flights are still on zero and the first outbound has left."

A large part of the provinces of North Holland and also Flevoland suffered from the major power failure due to a defect in a power station in Diemen, near Amsterdam.

Operator Tennet stated that the voltage on the power grid has now been rebuilt, and that power is gradually restored, with parts of North Holland already getting back power.

The cause of the power outage is not yet known and it is also not yet clear how many households have suffered from it. Due to the power failure less trains were available and part of the public transport in Amsterdam was out. In addition, some hospitals and the Media Park in Hilversum ran on emergency power. Endi
