Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton on Friday set the quickest time of the first day's two practice sessions at the Malaysian Grand Prix despite an engine problem which forced him to quit the first session.
The reigning world champion was sidelined on his fifth lap in the first practice due to a failure on the power unit inlet system, which made him halt the session.
After the engine problem was fixed, Hamilton returned to the second practice and clocked the fastest lap of the day-one minute and 39.790 seconds.
His Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg also made an impressive performance on that day. He dominated the first session and got the third position on the second.
Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen ranked second in both the two practice sessions. McLaren's Alonso, who missed the Australian Grand Prix after a crash in testing, got a smooth return, ranking the 14th and 16th in the two practices.
The third practice and the qualifying will be held on Saturday. Endi
