UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will open the first-ever Chiefs of Defense Conference at the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Chamber on Friday to discuss the UN peacekeeping, a UN spokesman told reporters here Thursday.

"The event will gather chiefs of defense and senior military officials from more than 100 member states to discuss issues central to UN peacekeeping," deputy UN spokesman Farhan Haq said at a daily news briefing here.

"This historic conference is part of a wider process of engagement with Member States to expand the peacekeeping partnership and promote effective and efficient implementation of complex mission mandates," he said.

Closing remarks will be delivered by the deputy UN secretary- general, Jan Eliasson, and the UN under-secretary-general for peacekeeping operations, Herve Ladsous, he added. Endite
