Lithuania approves joint military brigade with Poland, Ukraine

Lithuanian parliament unanimously approved on Thursday the treaty establishing joint military brigade with Poland and Ukraine, according to the press office of the Seimas, the Lithuanian parliament.

"The establishment of this military unit will be one of the largest military cooperation projects between Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine and will strengthen trilateral relations," said the Seimas in a press release after the voting.

LITPOLUKRBRIG, the joint military brigade, will be used for training purposes and joint military exercises, Lithuanian Defense Minister Juozas Olekas recently said.

According to Olekas, the brigade's headquarters will be established in Lublin, Poland. Each country will deploy an infantry battalion to the brigade.

"Lithuanian, Polish and Ukrainian military cooperation will add to regional security and international stability," said Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite when proposing the treaty to the Seimas in February.

Ukrainian parliament has already ratified the treaty. LITPOLUKRBRIG is to be established later this year, according to Lithuanian business news web vz.lt.

Negotiations on joint military brigade among the three countries were launched in 2007. The agreement was signed in Warsaw in September 2014. Endit
