EU optimistic about establishment of Special Court in Kosovo

Xinhua, March 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

An EU official said Thursday here that Kosovo showed last year its commitment to the Special Court, and to set up the court will be a positive development for Kosovo.

Federica Mogherini, in her first visit to Pristina as the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, said: "I count on the Parliament to reach two thirds in the next voting that I understand will be around April or May."

The assembly is due to vote soon, and two thirds of the votes in the 120-seated assembly are needed for establishing a Special Court that will have the authority to deal with alleged war crimes committed by Kosovo Liberation Army during the 1999 war.

In April 2014 Kosovo Assembly approved the exchange of letters between President Atifete Jahjaga and EU High Representative, Catherine Ashton, on creation of the Special Court. However, the establishment of the Court requires certain laws to be amended as well as some constitutional changes. Endit
