Mortgages continue to rise in Spain

The number of mortgages granted to potential home owners in Spain rose by 20 percent in the first month of 2015 when compared with January 2014, according to Spain's National Institute of Statistics (INE) on Thursday.

The INE reported that January 2015 saw 20,913 mortgages registered, continuing the trend seen in December 2014, when the number of mortgages rose by 28.9 percent and in November 2014 which witnessed a 14.2 percent rise.

October, September, July and June 2014 also saw increases in the number of mortgages as the housing market continued its recovery.

The average amount of money loaned to buyers has also increased, with the average mortgage in Spain standing at 105,792 euros (115,000 U.S. dollars), 4.3 percent higher than in January 2014.

The total amount of capital loaned in January this year was 25.2 percent up on the previous year to slightly over 2.2 billion euros. (1 euro = 1.09 U.S. dollars) Endit
