No scoring system change before and in Rio Olympics: BWF

Xinhua, March 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

The testing 5x11 point scoring system will not be introduced in Badminton World Federation (BWF) games before and in Rio Olympics 2016, said BWF Secretary General Thomas Lund here on Thursday.

Lund, who attended a BWF partnership launch with China's Xiamen Airlines, told reporters that the BWF recently tested the new scoring system, but it will not be introduced in this year's BWF World Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia, nor the Olympic Games in Rio in 2016.

"It is simply because players are going through the Olympic qualifying period, said Lund.

"We are still testing to see whether we can find ways to make our game more entertaining," he said. "But it's not the right time to change, because the players need time to get used to the new scoring system."

The current scoring system, which was adopted from August 2006, requires players to compete in three games of 21 points each, setting at 30.

The BWF is testing a new system that has five games of 11 points each with no setting.

Though there has been no final timeline for the change, Lund noted that some time after the Olympics in Rio 2016, "there will be more considerations and maybe a change to the scoring system." Endi
