Pakistan says Saudi Arabia seeks help against Yemeni rebels

Xinhua, March 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

Saudi Arabia has contacted Pakistan to provide assistance against rebels in Yemen, Pakistan's Foreign Ministry said Thursday.

The comments came hours after Saudi ambassador to Washington announced that his country and its Gulf allies have launched airstrikes on the Houthi rebels in Yemen.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar said on Thursday they had decided to act to protect Yemen against "aggression" by the Houhti militia, according to a joint statement.

The Pakistani Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Tasnim Aslam said the Saudi request to become part of its coalition against Yemeni rebels is currently being examined.

"Well I can confirm that we have been contacted by Saudi Arabia and the matter is being examined. That's all I have to say at the moment," the spokesperson said at her weekly briefing.

"She said Pakistani community in Yemen has been alerted in view of the current situation there. No decision, however, has so far been taken to shut down the embassy," she said.

Ms Aslam said the Pakistani mission has been asked to remain alert for evacuation of Pakistani community in case the situation further deteriorates. Endi
