Xinhua summary of Asia-Pacific stocks news at 1100 GMT, March 23

Chinese stocks rallied near a seven-year high for the ninth consecutive day on Monday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index surging by 1.95 percent to finish at 3687.73 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index gained 1.88 percent to close at nearly five-year new high of 12,780.32 points.

Total turnover on the two bourses once again passed 1 trillion yuan (163 billion U.S. dollars), with 161 shares soaring by the daily limit of 10 percent.

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended almost unchanged on Monday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) inched down 0.65 points, or 0.03 percent, to 2,036.59 at the close. Trading volume stood at 310.2 million shares worth 4.58 trillion won (4.1 billion U.S. dollars).

TOKYO -- Tokyo shares ended sharply higher with the benchmark Nikkei stocks index hitting a 15-year high Monday on optimism over the outlook of the Japanese economy.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 194.14 points, or 0. 99 percent, from Friday at 19,754.36, its highest close since April 2000.

The turnover was about 2,411.2 billion yen (about 20.09 billion U.S. dollars).

VIENTIANE -- The Lao stock market finished on Monday with the composite index unchanged at 1,413.48.

A total of 79,594 shares worth about 544 million Lao kip (about 67,000 U.S. dollars) changed hands at the stock market.

HONG KONG -- Taiwan's share prices closed up 0.08 percent on Monday with the weighted index up 8.4 points at 9,758.09, according to news reaching here from Taipei.

Turnover totaled 103.90 billion new Taiwan dollars (about 3.31 billion U.S. dollars) during the trading session.

HO CHI MINH CITY, March 23 (Xinhua) -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City bourse in south Vietnam, closed at 570.89 points on Monday, down 4.55 points, or 0.79 percent, against last Friday's closing session.

About 99.548 million shares worth 1.839 trillion Vietnamese dong (VND) (85.72 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the southern HCM City Stock Exchange. Prices of 63 stocks went up, 162 stocks fell down, while 65 stocks remained unchanged.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed up 119.27 points, or 0.49 percent to 24,494.51 points on Monday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 24,436.42 and 24, 559.77. Turnover totaled 91.75 billion HK dollars (about 11.82 billion U.S. dollars).

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital Hanoi, HNX- Index, closed at 83.94 points on Monday, down 1.19 points, or 1.4 percent, against the previous closing session.

A total of 47.661 million shares worth 600.482 billion Vietnamese dong (28.12 million U.S. dollars) were traded at the Hanoi Stock Exchange on Monday, an increase of 28.65 percent in volume and 14.5 percent in value against the previous closing session.

MANILA- -- Philippine shares closed 0.28 percent higher on Monday.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index increased by 22. 11 points to 7840.49. The all-share index went up by 8.47 points, or 0.19 percent, to 4537.78.

Trading volume reached 1.02 billion shares worth 8.83 billion pesos (196.96 million U.S. dollars).

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended lower here on Monday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,795.85, down 7. 80 points or 0.43 percent, and the Emas dropped 41.00 points or 0. 33 percent to 12,343.24.

Turnover declined to 2.13 billion shares valued at 1.77 billion ringgit Malaysia (478.83 million U.S. dollars), compared with 2.12 billion shares valued at 3.14 billion ringgit Malaysia (842.16 million U.S. dollars) on Friday.

DHAKA -- Bangladesh's DSE (Dhaka Stock Exchange) Broad Index closed Monday at 4,533.21 points, down 26.66 points or about 0.59 percent from Sunday's finish.

Among a total of 308 issues traded, 90 registered gains and 181 incurred losses while 37 remained unchanged.

Total turnover increased to about 3.14 billion taka (about 40. 31 million U.S. dollars) on Monday from about 2.68 billion taka ( about 34.38 million U.S. dollars) on Sunday.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks finished lower on Monday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) down 2.31 points, or 0.07 percent, to close at 3,410.13.

A total of 950.4 million shares changed hands with turnover of 957.6 million Singapore dollars (699 million U.S. dollars).

JAKARTA -- Indonesian shares closed lower by 5.97 points, or 0. 11 percent, to a level of 5,437.10 on Monday.

Some 220,365 transactions were booked, involving 7.83 billion shares worth 5.70 trillion rupiah (about 436.22 million U.S. dollars).

MUMBAI -- Indian stocks closed lower on Monday for fourth straight session with Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) declining the most in a week to counter gains for NTPC Ltd.
