Morocco dismantled a terrorist cell that was plotting terrorist attacks against the security and stability of the North African country, Moroccan Interior Ministry said in a statement on Sunday.
Many suspected were arrested in the cities of Agadir, Tangier, Laayoune, Boujaad, Tifelt, Marrakech, Taroudant, Ain Harouda, the statement said, adding that fire arms and a large amount of ammunition were seized in a hide-out in the southern city of Agadir.
The investigations carried out by the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigation (BCIJ) confirmed the involvement of the members of this cell, who pledged allegiance to the head of the ISIS terrorist organization, in recruiting and dispatching young Moroccans in Iraq and Syria using foreign funding, the ministry said.
Moroccan Interior Minister Mohamed Hassad said in a parlementary hearing session last July that 1,122 Moroccan citizens are enrolled in jihadist and terrorist groups in Syria and Iraq, and around 2,000 others from Moroccan origins with Europeans passports are also enrolled in these groups. Endit
