Water self-sufficiency part of Lee Kuan Yew's legacy: Singapore's deputy PM

Xinhua, March 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean said Saturday that the government will continue to invest in water infrastructure ahead of demand to safeguard the country against changing weather patterns.

Teo said it was Lee Kuan Yew's determination and the vision as the nation's founding prime minister that pushed Singapore towards water self-sufficiency.

Marking the World Water Day which falls on March 22, Teo wished ex-Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew well.

The founding prime minister of Singapore has been in hospital since Feb. 5, when he was admitted for severe pneumonia.

Teo said that Singaporeans should remember the hard work that enabled the country to transform its water vulnerability into an advantage as the city state celebrate its 50th birthday this year.

Teo mentioned that climate change will pose new challenges to the country's sustainable development efforts. To safeguard Singapore against changing weather patterns, the government will continue to invest in water infrastructure ahead of demand.

It is estimated that water demand in Singapore is currently about 400 million gallons per day, which is set to double by 2060. Endi
