Lottery sales up 23.9 percent

China's lottery sales rose to 24.79 billion yuan (4.05 billion U.S. dollars) in February, up 23.9 percent from the same month last year, official data showed on Friday.

Welfare lottery sales increased by 10.7 percent to reach 13.01 billion yuan, while that of sports lottery surged 42.7 percent to 11.78 billion yuan, the Ministry of Finance (MOF) announced in a statement.

Some 64.02 billion yuan's worth of lottery tickets were sold in January and February combined, a year-on-year increase of 35.8 percent.

Under lottery management rules, money from lottery ticket sales covers administrative fees and public welfare projects as well as the jackpot.

Last year saw a total 382.38 billion yuan spent on lottery tickets, up 23.6 percent from 2013, according to MOF data. Endi
