NZ migration hits record high in February

Xinhua, March 20, 2015 Adjust font size:

New Zealand migration growth almost doubled in the year to the end of February, driven by a record number of arrivals and fewer departures, the government statistics agency said Friday.

The annual net gain of migrants, the number of arrivals minus departures, in the year through February was 55,100, up significantly on the 29,900 recorded in the year earlier period, according to Statistics New Zealand.

It was the seventh month in a row that the annual record for a net gain of migrants has been broken, and was driven by a record 112,600 arrivals and fewer departures, said a statement from the agency.

New Zealand's biggest net gain of migrants in the February year was from India at 11,800, most of whom arrived on student visas.

The next biggest net gains in migrants were from China (7,500), Britain (5,100), and the Philippines (3,800). Endi
