New James Bond film to promote Mexico City: mayor

Xinhua, March 20, 2015 Adjust font size:

The filming in Mexico's capital of parts of the latest James Bond film, "Spectre", will provide the city with good global publicity, Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera said Thursday.

At a joint press conference with Mexican Minister of Tourism Claudia Ruiz Massieu, the mayor boasted that Mexico City was chosen as the location for the opening scenes of the 007 film, over such cosmopolitan centers as New York and Singapore.

"It will make us proud to have Mexico City form part of the opening scenes, because the whole world will see us. Everyone knows the reach James Bond has worldwide," said Mancera, adding "it is a great showcase."

In response to media reports that Mexico has spent up to 14 million U.S. dollars to ensure it gets favorable publicity from its role in the feature film, Mancera said the city had no economic stake in the film, but that it was supplying locations and helping production with such logistics as rerouting traffic.

According to Ruiz Massieu, the capital's cameo in the latest Bond movie is part of the ministry's national promotion strategy, which has in the past two years attracted more than 53 million international visitors.
