Kiwi dairy firms join Aussie, U.S counterparts in TPP bid

New Zealand's dairy industry sector has united with counterparts in Australia and the United States in urging the three governments to swiftly conclude a " commercially meaningful" agreement in the controversial 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).

The Dairy Companies Association of New Zealand (DCANZ) and national dairy associations in Australia and the U.S. had sent a joint letter to the three governments reflecting their commitment to a TPP outcome that was "transformative for dairy trade in the region," said DCANZ chairman Malcolm Bailey.

"We have a historic opportunity to remove distortions from the dairy market in the Asia-Pacific region. Our governments must grab hold of this," Bailey said in a statement on Friday.

The TPP negotiations have been a source of controversy because of their secrecy and proposals that would allow corporations to demand compensation from governments for laws or regulations, such as health, safety or industrial relations rules, that affect their business. Endi
