India-Japan nuke cooperation project runs into stumbling block: media

Xinhua, March 20, 2015 Adjust font size:

The project of nuclear cooperation between India and Japan has run into a stumbling block, as Tokyo insists on Delhi providing nation specific data over nuclear material like uranium, plutonium and nuclear parts, The Hindu daily reported on Friday.

Japan has also cautioned India not to resume nuclear arms tests or it would immediately cancel such a civilian nuclear deal, the media quoted official sources as saying.

Japan would further seek the return of all Japanese-origin equipment and parts if India unilaterally breaks its moratorium of nuclear arms test, said the report.

India is not willing to meet either of the Japanese demands as it would damage the country's energy security, said the report.

Japan is also calling on India to sign a test ban treaty like the Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test- Ban Treaty, which Delhi is yet to decide.

India and Japan have agreed to accelerate negotiations on a civil nuclear deal to conclude it at an early date, during a visit to Tokyo by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi last September.

The two countries have been holding negotiations on the Agreement for Cooperation in the Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy. Endi
