Indian-controlled Kashmir governor says local government to initiate dialogue with stakeholders

Xinhua, March 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

Indian- controlled Kashmir Governor N N Vohara said Wednesday the local government would initiate a "meaningful dialogue" with all political groups, irrespective of their ideological views and predilections, aimed at seeking resolution to issues pertaining to the region.

Vohra was addressing a joint session of newly elected legislators of the restive region in Jammu, the winter capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir. "The coalition government will facilitate and help initiate a sustained and meaningful dialogue with all internal stakeholders, which will include all political groups irrespective of their ideological views and predilections," Vohara said. "This dialogue will seek to build a broad based consensus on the resolution of all outstanding issues of Jammu and Kashmir ( Indian-controlled Kashmir)."

India's rightwing Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) and region's Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are running a coalition government in the region.

Vohra reminded legislatures that the National Democratic Alliance government in India led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee, had initiated a dialogue process with all political groups, including the separatist Hurriyat (freedom) Conference, and hoped the coalition government would follow a similar approach.

A separatist movement and guerilla war challenging New Delhi's rule has been going on in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989. Endi
