Italy to do its part in Libya within UN: Italian FM

Xinhua, March 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

Italy is ready to do its part in supporting decisions taken by the United Nations (UN) in Libya, Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni said on Wednesday after meeting UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon here.

"Italy is ready to do everything possible to support decisions taken by the UN, after an agreement reached by the sides in Libya, to maintain results obtained on the ground," Gentiloni told a joint press conference at the foreign ministry in Rome.

Gentiloni said his country was pushing "all sides and countries in the region to contribute to good results that are not taken for granted."

Ban told the press conference he welcomed the progress made in the ongoing negotiations and hoped that "the parties can comply with an agreement for a national unity government in Libya."

Ban said Italy played a fundamental role in the UN efforts to promote dialogue in Libya. The UN has developed "a very strong partnership with Italy which is a milestone for international peace," he added. Endit
