British unemployment rate remains at 5.7 pct in Jan.

The British unemployment rate in the three-month period ending January 2015 was at 5.7 percent, the same as the three months leading up to December 2014, remaining at the lowest level since mid 2008, data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed Wednesday.

The unemployment rate is slightly higher than the market estimation consensus of 5.6 percent.

There were 1.86 million unemployed people, 102,000 fewer than from August to October 2014, and 479,000 fewer than a year earlier, data revealed.

The employment rate for those aged 16 to 64 in the three months to January 2015 was 73.3 percent, the highest since comparable records began in 1971, figures showed.

There were 30.94 million people in employment aged 16 and over, 143,000 more than for August to October 2014 and 617,000 more than for a year earlier, said the government's statistics department of the government.

Claims for unemployment benefits fell by 25,100 to a total of 816,800 in February 2015 from the previous month. Compared with a year earlier, it was down by 358,300, data also showed. Endit
