Obama to host Italian PM over Ukraine in April

Xinhua, March 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

U.S. President Barack Obama will meet with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi at the White House next month over issues including Ukraine, Libya and the Islamic State, the White House said on Tuesday.

At their meeting on April 17, the two leaders will discuss support for Ukraine and the continuing efforts to press the independence-seeking rebels in eastern Ukraine to adhere to the ceasefire agreements reached in September last year and in February this year in the Belarusian capital of Minsk.

The deals have not been fully implemented, with sporadic fighting still besieging the eastern part of Ukraine, where some 6,000 people have been killed since April last year.

In addition, Obama and Renzi will discuss the conflict in Libya, the ongoing battle against the extremist Islamic State group, the economic development in Europe, the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership negotiations, climate change and energy security, the White House said.

Renzi assumed the premiership in February last year, and his upcoming visit will be his first trip to the United States. Endi
