Danish national football coach to step down

Xinhua, March 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

Morten Olsen announced Tuesday that he will stop as head coach of the Danish national football team when his current contract expires in the summer of 2016.

Olsen said at a press conference held in Broendby of Denmark that he has decided to step down from his post on July 1, 2016.

"After 19 years as a football player in red and white colors, and now almost 16 years as a coach, it is an emotional decision to make. It's not a job, but more of a lifestyle. I have always been proud of it," Olsen said.

Olsen's decision came after a pay dispute Monday between the Danish Football Association (DBU) and the national players' union.

Denmark's national football team is scheduled to play a friendly match against the United States in Aarhus on March 25 but lacks an agreement on pay levels for international games as a previous deal expired in 2014.

However, Olsen does not expect that the ongoing conflict between DBU and players will give future cooperation problems.

Olsen has picked up the players for the two upcoming matches against the United States and France in spite of the ongoing conflict. Endi
