Huge shortfall in compensation after Shenzhen airport car accident

Victims in a deadly car accident at Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport on March 1 are facing an estimated shortfall of over 10 million yuan (1.6 million U.S. dollars) in compensation.
The accident in south China's Guangdong Province killed nine and injured 24. The driver, a 24-year-old woman surnamed Yang, was among those killed in the accident. Police determined in an investigation on Monday that Yang is fully responsible for the accident due to her speeding and improper operation of the vehicle.
Luo Hongwei, deputy head of the investigation team, said no alcohol or drugs were found in the driver's system, nor did they find a motive for her to endanger public security.
Around 3:30 p.m. on March 1, a red sedan ran over pedestrians near Terminal 3 of the airport, killing five at the scene and injuring 24 others, local police said on a verified microblog account. Four later died in the hospital.
The city's emergency center said six had been treated and discharged and the remaining 18 are still undergoing treatment, including five who were heavily wounded. All the injured are in stable condition.
According to the local transportation authority, the vehicle's compulsory insurance for traffic accidents only covers a maximum of 122,000 yuan -- not nearly enough to pay compensation costs estimated to exceed 10 million yuan.
The local government has paid for medical costs and is researching ways to compensate families of the victims and those injured in the accident. Endi
