The Indian government said on Tuesday that the tiger population in the country stood at 2,226, up 30 percent since 2011.

"There are 2,226 tigers today. In the last four years, there has been an increase of 30 percent in their population," Indian Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar told the parliament.

Describing poaching as a "big problem," the Minister said 22 poachers were killed last year in encounters by various enforcement agencies.

"Poaching has to be stopped and the government has taken various pro-active measures in this regard," he added. Endi
