2nd LD Writethru: 5 killed, 5 injured as suicide car bomb rocks S. Afghanistan

Xinhua, March 16, 2015 Adjust font size:

Five people including three civilians lost their lives and five others sustained injuries as a suicide car bomb rocked Taliban former stronghold the southern Helmand province on Monday, spokesman for provincial government Omar Zawak said. "A terrorist riding in an explosive-borne car blew it up next to a police checkpoint outside provincial capital Lashkar Gah at around 04: 50 p.m. local time today, killing himself and four others including two police and two civilians," Zawak told Xinhua.

Earlier, a security official who declined to be named in talks with Xinhua confirmed the killing of six people including the bomber, two police and three civilians including a child and mother.

The bloody suicide car bombing happened amid the ongoing Afghan security forces military operations in parts of the restive Helmand province.

Notorious for growing poppy and militancy, Helmand has been regarded as Taliban hotbed in the conflict-hit Afghanistan.

More than 100 Taliban militants, according security officials, have been killed in Helmand province over the past month.

A statement of the Defense Ministry released Monday claimed killing seven Taliban insurgents in Taliban former stronghold the Sangin district in Helmand province over the past 24 hours. Endi
