One leftist rebel killed, another captured in S. Philippines

Philippine government forces killed a suspected leftist rebel and captured another in separate incidents in southern Philippines on Monday, a military official said.

Joint elements of the 29th Infantry Battalion (IB) and the 13th Regional Public Safety Battalion encountered an undetermined number of New People's Army (NPA) rebels in the village of Himbangan, Kicharao town in Agusan Del Norte.

Lt. Col Adonis Ariel Orio, commander of 29th IB, said a rebel was killed and his men recovered some firearms.

In Agusan del sur province, a suspected NPA bandit was captured after he was wounded during an encounter in the village of Sta. Cruz, Rosario.

The NPA, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, has been waging a guerrilla campaign for four decades. Endi
