Russia's armed forces launched large-scale snap drills in almost all corners of the country and neighboring Kyrgyzstan, the Defense Ministry said Monday.

"New threats and challenges require further enhancement of combat capabilities and special attention has been given to the northern direction," Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said.

Drills conducted in the southern and eastern military districts involved over 38,000 troops, 3,300 combat vehicles, 41 warships, 15 submarines and 110 aircraft.

Meanwhile in Kyrgyzstan, where Russia maintains its airbase Kant, Su-25SM frontline bombers and Mi-8MTV helicopters conducted exercises in the rocky regions to train their skills of search and elimination of enemies in the difficult mountain environment.

According to the ministry, the order to start the exercises was given by President Vladimir Putin. The drills will last until March 21. Endi
