India's pre-independence icon Mahatma Gandhi's statue unveiled in Britain

India's pre-independence icon Mahatma Gandhi's statue was Saturday unveiled in London's Parliament Square by British Prime Minister David Cameron and Indian Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.

The nine-foot bronze statue now stands alongside a statue of Britain's wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill in a rare honor given to the Mahatma by Britain, local TV channels reported.

The statue has been funded by donations of over 1 million pounds to the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust, headed by an Indian- origin Labor Party peer.

Gandhi helped India gain independence from Britain in 1947 through his non-violence movement. Endi
