Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes captured the pole position in the Formula One season-opening race after topping Saturday's qualifying session at the Australian Grand Prix.

Hamilton clocked a time of one minute and 26.327 seconds at the Albert Park circuit, more than half a second quicker than his teammate Nico Rosberg, who ranked the second place.

Felipe Massa from Williams finished the third, followed by Ferrari drivers Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen.

"It has been a great start to the weekend," Hamilton said.

It also marked the defending champion's fourth pole in Australia, the first driver to hit the record. Endi
